Hold On To your Hats! Warcraft: The Beginning Earns Big!

It might not be what Blizzard expected, but it looks like Warcraft: The Beginning is on its way to becoming the most profitable video game movie every. That’s because, despite lukewarm appreciation for the Warcraft movie in the US, it has received plenty of attention in the most unlikely of sources: China.
In the midst of hilarious commentary—such as one man saying that they should make a game out of Warcraft—the film was an impressively huge success in China. The film opened to roughly 3,000 theaters throughout the country, and contributed to a fantastic first-week take of $156 million.

However, it is believed that this was mostly due to the fact that it opened during a relatively long weekend. Warcraft’s first week in China was during one of their national holidays, which could explain why there were more moviegoers than usual.
This is supported by the sudden drop in its second weekend, wherein the movie earned just shy of $23 million. This equates to nearly a 70% drop from its first weekend’s $46 million. However, analysts have been quick to point out that this was not unusual for Hollywood blockbusters showing in China; so far, only Disney’s Zootopia has been able to circumvent this.
It should be noted, however, that Warcraft’s current worldwide take is approximately $377.6 million. That’s way more than what Prince of Persia: Sands of Time every made (that film made $335 million throughout its showing). This effectively places Warcraft in first place, as far as video game films are concerned.
As it is, the film is already clear of its $168 million budget, so while it might not be a critical success, the film remains to be a hit in the box office. As it goes into its third week, with stiff competition coming in via Independence Day: Resurgence, it remains to be seen whether or not Warcraft: The Beginning can break into the $400 millions.
But it looks like Blizzard has enough proof to ensure that the franchise can be milked for some rather neat profit.
